赤い250SWB Part 6 – Reshaping the roof and the fender
A couple of weeks ago, I visited Automobile Council 2026, held at Makuhari Messe in Japan, and took a good long look at the 250SWB in person. I came away feeling that “the line from the roof to the rear trunk is slimmer than I’d imagined,” so I decided to reflect that in my model.

The kit gave the impression that the corners on both sides of the roof were too sharply angled, so I first roughed in the line with a coarse metal file, then used 180-240grit sandpaper to smooth the edges and blend them into the surrounding surfaces.

For the panel line on the rear trunk, I filled the original scribed groove with urethane surfacer, then rescribed it more finely using the Argo File diamond file I introduced in the entry two posts ago.
The descending line from the rear edge of the roof, past the rear window and down to the trunk, was filed back until it looked nearly straight and flat when viewed from the side. I also used a “BMC DANMO 0.3/0.6 mm” chisel to carve a step along the edge where the chrome window surround will attach — since I plan to make that trim from nickel silver or stainless steel sheet.

The bulge at the top of the rear fender was also flattened by pressing a chisel against the peak of the curve and filing it down, bringing it closer to a straight line when viewed from the side. The purple sandpaper shown is the 3M™ Cubitron™ II Clean Sanding Sheet #400 — its cutting performance is outstanding, just as advertised, though I found it doesn’t last as long when working with white metal.

After a light coat of gray lacquer surfacer, I checked how well the corrected surfaces flowed into one another. The recesses for the turn signal and brake light, which had become partially filled and distorted, were carefully reshaped little by little using a spherical bit that matched their curvature.
